I have looked at the canon m50 and multiple of Sony's consumer camcorders. The recommended budget camera in the universal post is kind of dated. I need a camera with good autofocus, mic jack, clean hdmi, and decent 4k. Anything around $800 is perfect. Please help. 🙂

The Canon M6 MkII for $800 does what you need. Some of the best AF in the market, and the rest you requested. Upgrade its firmware to get 4k/24p at 120mbps. Get the kit lens too. If you want a faster kit lens for cinematic filmmaking, get the Canon 17-55mm f2.8 IS with an active adapter.

And if you also want IBIS, there's a new M-based camera coming in October for $1200. Rumors say that the new camera will have the DPAF II autofocus system, and zebras, on top of what the M6 MkII does.

u/ItsLikeJesusClub – with a ~$800 budget for a filmmaking camera with autofocus, I recommend something like this $699.95 used Fuji X-T30 body and a $169 used Fujinon XC 15-45mm power zoom.

The X-T30 would give you full DCI 4K resolution for video (4096x2160p) compared to most mirrorless cameras in this price range, which are limited to Ultra HD (3840x2160p).

Plus, if you decide to get serious about video, the X-T30 has a built-in LOG profile and 10-bit output via HDMI to an optional external recorder.

Here is why 10-bit is better than 8-bit video (most mirrorless cameras in this price range have no 10-bit option – internal or external).

Here is the image quality this camera can produce:

Here it is shooting 8-bit LOG:

Here it is with the built-in Eterna film simulation LUT:

Here it is shooting 1080/120p slow motion:

And here is the still image quality it can produce.

The X-T30 is not a perfect camera. It has a non-standard 2.5mm mic input jack, so you need a 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter to plug in a standard mic. And you can only record 4K for 10 minutes continuously and 1080p for 15 minutes before you have to restart. Most 4K interchangeable lens cameras in this class record for 30 minutes continuously.

That said, If you don't need long continuous recording, the X-T30 is the best still/video camera in this price class, in my view.

And, when budget permits, you can buy an external recorder to record 10-bit 4:2:2, as seen here:

Hope this is helpful and good luck finding the right filmmaking camera for your needs!
